Hailey Bieber Explains the Meaning Behind Her Brand Name Rhode and "Glazed Donut" Skin

Everything's going on with you and Justin, you've had a rough couple of months, how is everything going?

Um, everything's good. I'm doing okay.

My health scare has, you know, we've moved on from it.

And I'm just kind of allowing my body the time to heal and do its thing.

But I'm doing okay. He's also doing okay.

Obviously, it's been a weird turn of events the last couple of months and even the last few days.

But he's okay, and he's going to be totally okay.

Okay, good, yeah. I'm so happy.

I have to ask. You have a giant career, but now you finally have your own skincare line.

And we were talking about this, this is years ago.

I was looking, and it's been almost 10 years since you moved to the city to start modeling.

Yes.

And look at you now! But what do you remember about those days?

Um, you know, I moved into the city when I was 17.

I kind of had an agreement with my parents. I had really just started modeling.

And I was begging them like, "Let me move into the city, please, it's so much easier for everything, for travel and for castings."

And they were like, "Absolutely not, unless you can afford it on your own."

And I was like, "Okay, deal! If I book a job where I can afford my own rent for the whole year, you have to let me move out."

我就說：「好，一言為定！如果我接到的工作能付清一整年的房租，你們就必須讓我搬出去。」

And I booked my first job and it was for the whole year of rent.

結果我接到的第一份工作，報酬剛好夠付一整年的房租。

Like to the dollar! So I was like, "You said!"

一分錢都不差！我就說：「這可是你們說的哦！」

You said!

So I moved out, but I lived with my older sister until I turned 18.

所以我搬出去了，但我一直和姊姊住在一起，直到我滿18歲。

But something that I vividly remember about moving into the city and having my first apartment was...

不過關於搬進城裡、擁有第一個公寓，我記憶猶新的是……

I was out to dinner one night with Justin, and...

有一晚我和小賈斯汀一起出去吃晚餐，然後……

He was like, "So, you got your own place, how's it been? Like, you got all your furniture, you have everything you need?"

他就問：「聽說妳有了自己的小窩，感覺如何？家具都買齊了嗎？需要用的東西都有了嗎？」

And I'm like, "Yeah, it's amazing, I love it. You know, I have a couch, it's great, I have dishes..."

我就說：「對啊，棒極了，我很喜歡。我有沙發，真的很讚，我也有盤子……」

It's a big deal! It's a big deal, yeah!

這可是大喜事！真的很了不起！

I have spoons! Everything is such a big deal.

我還有湯匙呢！每件小事都很令人興奮。

And he's like, "Well, that's amazing! Like, is there anything you don't have yet? Is there anything like you're missing?"

他就說：「太棒了！那有沒有什麼是妳還沒有的？還缺少什麼嗎？」

And I'm like, "Yeah, I don't have a TV yet, but like I'm gonna get one, it's like not a big deal."

我就答：「嗯，我還沒有電視，不過之後會去買一台，沒什麼大不了的。」

And he's like, "Okay, okay, cool."

他就說：「好，我知道了。」

And then he was driving me home, and on the way he was like, "I can't do this, we gotta go to Best Buy."

然後他開車送我回家，路上他突然說：「不行，我們得去一趟 Best Buy。」

So he took me to Best Buy on the way home, and I was like mortified because I'm like, "You're not about to buy me a TV."

所以他在回家路上帶我去了 Best Buy，我當時尷尬得要命，因為我想著：「你該不會要買電視給我吧。」

And he bought me a TV!

結果他真的買了一台電視給我！

No way!

不會吧！

And he carried it up, he carried it upstairs himself, he unboxed it, did the whole thing.

而且他親自搬上樓，拆箱、安裝，一手包辦。

See, that's what I'm talking about. Justin, you're a good man, you're a gentleman!

I still have the TV to this day! I still have it to this day.

I could not get rid of the TV, you guys, it was too cute.

Who got you started in fashion? Who got you interested? Was it your mom, your sister?

I mean, I definitely always looked at my mom's style and admired it.

我是說，我一直很欣賞並佩服我媽媽的穿搭風格。

And I felt like she always was passionate about clothing and fashion.

我覺得她總是對服裝和時尚充滿熱情。

But I would say I definitely was inspired in the modeling space from the greats: Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell.

但要說到模特兒圈，我的靈感絕對來自那些傳奇人物：凱特·摩絲、克莉絲蒂·杜靈頓、納奧米·坎貝爾。

And then I read somewhere you said you named those icons and then you said, "and also Hannah Montana."

Um, yeah, I technically was also very fashion inspired at the time by Hannah Montana, aka Miley Cyrus.

I mean, that's... a lot of people out there feel the same way!

She used to wear like outfits on Hannah Montana that I would try to recreate, because I thought they were just like everything.

I never knew that your middle name is Rhode.

我以前都不知道妳的中間名是 Rhode。

Yes, it's also my mom's middle name.

Beautiful name, R-H-O-D-E, I love that. And that is the name of your new line!

很美的名字，R-H-O-D-E，我很喜歡。這也是妳新品牌的名字！

What made you go like, "I have to do it"?

是什麼契機讓妳決定「我一定要做這件事」？

I mean, I'm assuming everyone just asks you about your skincare routine all the time.

我想大家應該一直都在問妳的保養步驟吧。

Yeah, definitely, it was like the thing I would get asked about the most.

是的，絕對是這樣，這大概是我最常被問到的問題。

Especially even working with different makeup artists, they would always be like, "What do you do for your skin?"

特別是和不同的彩妝師合作時，他們總會問：「妳平時是怎麼保養皮膚的？」

It was just always something I felt really passionate about.

保養這件事一直是我非常感興趣且熱愛領域。

I was always someone who's, and still am clearly to this day, very committed to a routine.

Very regimented person who's like very OCD about a skincare routine.

我是個極度有規律、對保養步驟有著某種強迫症的人。

And I just felt like over the last almost 10 years of working in this industry...

我覺得在過去近10年的行業工作經驗中……

I felt like I was really able to develop my beauty philosophy.

我建立起了自己的美容哲學。

And I got to a point where I was like, I want to make a curated, edited line of essentials.

到了某個階段我心想：我想要推出一系列精選且極具必備價值的保養品。

Like my go-to things that can work for everyone.

也就是我私心推薦、且適用於每個人的必備好物。

Did you always know the name Rhode was going to be the title?

妳一開始就知道要用 Rhode 作為品牌名稱嗎？

Um, I wasn't sure in the very beginning. I always knew I wanted Rhode to be a brand that I started.

嗯，最開始我不確定。但我一直希望由我創立的品牌能叫 Rhode。

And as I was developing and having the conversations about the skincare brand, Rhode Skin just kept coming to me.

在籌備和討論這個護膚品牌時，Rhode Skin 這個名字不斷出現在我腦海中。

And I also felt like it was very fitting because my mom taught me so much about taking care of myself and skincare and sun care and all these different things.

我也覺得這個名字非常合適，因為我媽媽教了我許多關於自我照顧、肌膚保養、防曬等知識。

So I thought there was a really nice story there with the name.

所以我認為這個名字背後有一個非常溫馨的故事。

I know you released this as a teaser and I want to ask you about this because I think it's funny.

A glazed donut. And then I was like, okay, there must be something to this.
