Apple iPhone Duo Hands-On: A Foldable iPhone for $1,999

Apple has finally folded.

蘋果終於也「折」了。

After years of folding Android phones, the iPhone Duo is here at last.

在安卓折疊機問世多年後，iPhone Duo 終於登場了。

And it's the biggest shakeup to the company's smartphone lineup since Steve Jobs first announced that rectangle with rounded corners.

這是自賈伯斯首次發表那款圓角矩形手機以來，蘋果智慧型手機陣容最大的一次變革。

For $1,999, you can now have a 7.6-inch tablet that fits in your pocket.

花費 1,999 美元，你現在就能擁有一台能放進口袋的 7.6 吋平板。

I spent the day at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, to try the new iPhone before it ships on October 23rd.

我在加州庫比蒂諾的蘋果總部待了一整天，在 10 月 23 日正式出貨前搶先體驗這款全新 iPhone。

Here are my three takeaways.

以下是我整理出的三大重點。

Number one: it is so much screen.

第一點：螢幕真的超級大。

When it's shut, it's like using a squatter, wider iPhone with a slightly different app layout.

閉合時，感覺就像在用一款更矮胖、更寬的 iPhone，應用程式版面也略有不同。

Controls are now on the side of the screen rather than on the top, so you can easily reach them with one hand.

控制選項移到了螢幕側邊而不是頂部，方便單手輕鬆觸控。

Flip it open, and the iPhone turns into a little tablet.

翻開之後，iPhone 就搖身一變成為一台小平板。

I tested some glorious full-screen YouTube watching and reading articles with gigantic text.

我測試了極度享受的全螢幕 YouTube 觀看體驗，以及用超大字體閱讀文章。

And it's a pretty nice experience.

整體體驗相當不錯。

You can prop up the Duo into a little tent mode to watch from the front screen, or a laptop mode to watch it from the interior screen.

你可以將 Duo 立成帳篷模式從外螢幕觀看，或是立成筆電模式從內螢幕觀看。

As long as you don't mind the slight indent between the phone's two halves, a.k.a. the crease.

前提是你不介意手機兩半之間那道微小的凹痕，也就是所謂的摺痕。

Most of the time, I couldn't see it, but I could feel it.

大多數時候我看不出它，但摸得出來。

There's some unique advantages to this two-screen set-up.

這種雙螢幕設計有一些獨特的優勢。

The one that got the biggest applause: you can play cartoons on the outside screen while you're taking a picture of your kids to distract them.

最受讚賞的功能是：幫小孩拍照時，可以在外螢幕播放卡通來吸引他們的注意力。

Number two: you can be more productive.

第二點：生產力大幅提升。

The Duo isn't quite as big as the mini iPad. It's more like a micro iPad.

But you can do some of the tablet's multitasking features.

但你已經能使用平板的一些多工處理功能。

I already do a lot of work on my iPhone, but I could see how much more work I could do if I could see two apps side by side.

90% of the time, I have Word document open on one side and a webpage open on the other, and you can do that with the Duo.

我九成的時間都一邊開著 Word 文件、另一邊開著網頁，而在 Duo 上就能這樣做。

You could also be less productive and have Netflix open while you work on other stuff.

你也可以選擇摸魚，邊處理其他事情邊看 Netflix。

But developers need to make their apps Duo compatible.

但開發者需要讓他們的應用程式相容於 Duo。

Apple showed off Duo-friendly versions of Slack and Zoom,

蘋果展示了適配 Duo 的 Slack 與 Zoom 版本，

and I'll be waiting for the rest of the App Store to catch up.

Number three: there are tradeoffs.

第三點：有所取捨與妥協。

The iPhone Duo is a step down from Apple's less pricey Pro models in some ways.

在某些方面，iPhone Duo 其實比起價格更親民的 Pro 系列有所縮水。

There are only two main cameras.

它只有兩顆主鏡頭。

The 18 Pro has 8x zoom, while the Duo only promises 2x zoom.

18 Pro 具備 8 倍變焦，而 Duo 僅提供 2 倍變焦。

So it's an iPhone for people who don't get worked up about missing the perfect shot.

因此這款 iPhone 比較適合那些不在乎是否錯失完美鏡頭的人。

There's also no Face ID, only Touch ID, and if you're not holding the phone the right way, it's a little harder to authenticate.

它也沒有 Face ID，僅配備 Touch ID；如果拿手機的姿勢不對，驗證起來會稍微麻煩一點。

The trick will be to register multiple fingerprints so you can unlock it with either hand.

訣竅在於註冊多組指紋，這樣兩隻手都能順暢解鎖。

The battery life is about the same as the 18 Pro: 24 hours of regular use per charge.

電池續航力與 18 Pro 大致相當：每次充電可正常使用 24 小時。

If you're only watching video on the outside screen, you get more: 37 hours.

But I'll need to test this in the real world.

Apple didn't invent the folding phone.

折疊手機並不是蘋果發明的。

In fact, here's one from Samsung that looks just like the Duo, called the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

事實上，三星這款名為 Galaxy Z Fold 8 的手機看起來就跟 Duo 如出一轍。

And Samsung has long been a display supplier for Apple.

而且三星長期以來一直是蘋果的螢幕面板供應商。

For years, those folding phones have been more of a gimmick than a mainstream buy.

多年來，折疊手機一直偏向噱頭，而不是大眾主流首選。

Apple has spent a lot of time on its interface and software to get this multi-mode device to work.

蘋果在使用者介面與軟體上下足了功夫，讓這款多模式設備運作順暢。

But until I'm able to take it for a real test drive, I'm not totally sold yet.

但在我能真正深入長期實測之前，我還沒有完全被說服。
