Every winter, our school holds a cooking contest that all students look forward to. This year, fifteen teams signed up, and the excitement filled the hallways for weeks before the event started. On the big day, our teacher gathered everyone together and reminded us to advise each other, be patient, and show good sportsmanship. It was finally time to kick off one of the best days of the school year.

My team decided to make Japanese food because we all loved the flavors. We planned to cook chicken wings with a thick, sweet sauce and serve a warm meat soup on the side. Looking at the other teams, we noticed that some could neither plan their time well nor communicate clearly with each other. That kind of poor teamwork could easily lead to failure, so we made sure to talk and listen from the very beginning.

Since we could not afford expensive or rare ingredients, we chose simple but fresh ones from the local market. Before the contest, our teacher gave us a helpful suggestion: follow ancient cooking methods to slowly bring out the golden color in the sauce. This meant using lower heat and more patience. We put on our matching school shirts, tied our aprons, and got to work with great energy.

Outside, snow was falling softly on the square in front of our school. The white ground looked quiet and peaceful, but inside the kitchen, everything was busy and loud. The smell of food was so strong that I could notice different flavors with my nose as I walked from one cooking station to another. One of my teammates had a terrible toothache that day but still helped without complaining at all. Even a pilot who had just landed at a nearby airport came to cheer for us—he was the proud father of one of our teammates.

A judge with short, curly brown hair walked slowly around the room, stopping at each table to taste the dishes. She paused near the corner where an old coal stove was still burning and mentioned that it gave the food nearby a rich, deep flavor. When she finally stopped at our table and took a long, careful bite, we all went crazy with nervous excitement.

When the results were announced, our team had succeeded and was named the winner of the contest. The judges presented us with a shiny golden trophy, and we cheered as loud as we could. Neither the other teams nor even the judges had expected us to win from the beginning. It was a moment that made all our hard work feel truly worth it.

Looking back at that day, the contest taught us something important. If you listen to good advice, choose the right suggestion at the right time, and believe in your team, you can steal the spotlight even when stronger competitors are around. It was a little crazy and very tiring, but it was also one of the most wonderful experiences of our school life.
