Every August, students from the sixth and seventh grades take part in a special nature camp near the big mountain behind their school. The aim of the camp is to help them learn about nature, history, and practical life skills. This year, the school decided to appoint Mr. Chen, a kind and experienced teacher, as the camp leader. He was the best person for the job.
On the first morning, the students climbed into a large truck and rode to the foot of the mountain. They began to walk along a narrow path through a thick wood. Tall trees grew on both sides of the road. The guide asked everyone to roll up their sleeves and be ready to work hard. Some students wanted to hide behind the others because they felt nervous, but Mr. Chen walked with them and gave words of support.
Near the top of the mountain, the students found a small Christian church. It was very old and made of wood and gold-colored stone. The guide explained that workers from many different countries, including places in Africa, helped build the church long ago. Many of them came to this area during the gold rush. The guide said, "This tradition of people from different places working together is still relevant today."
The latter part of the day took the students to a quiet lake at the foot of the mountain. They each took a turn riding in a small boat on the water. After the boat ride, Mr. Chen held a short assessment. He asked the students to think about the potential consequences of cutting down too many trees in the wood. He wanted them to give their answers after careful consideration. One student said, "The consequence would be that animals lose their home."
Back at camp, the students were separated into small groups. Each group used a large screen to show their ideas to the class. The camp also employed a few local guides who gave practical advice on how to protect the mountain. Everyone listened carefully and took notes. The students were beginning to make real progress in their understanding of nature.
By the last day of camp, the path they had helped clean was safe and clear. The apartment buildings back in the city felt very far away from this quiet place. Mr. Chen told the students, "You have shown great potential. With full consideration for the world around you, you can help make it a better place." The students smiled and felt proud of what they had done.
The camp showed that young people can make real progress when they aim high and work together. No matter where the path leads, every step forward is important. The lessons they learned that August in the wood and on the mountain would stay with them for a long time.
