This Saturday was the eighth time that Zhonghua Junior High School held its annual Science and Culture Fair. Lin, the grandchild of Mr. Chen, a well-known pioneer inventor, arrived early in the morning to help set up the family's booth. Mr. Chen's most exciting invention this year was a small robot that could walk across the floor and wave its arm at visitors. Although the weather outside was quite cruel and icy, both Lin and Grandpa felt warm and cheerful inside the busy school building.
Once inside the hall, Lin saw that the fair was truly fantastic. Visitors had come from all over the city and walked through a long corridor that stretched nearly a kilometre from one end to the other. A foreigner from Australia stopped at their booth and tried very hard to pronounce the Chinese words written on the display board. He was wearing shorts even in such cold weather, while Lin had to put on a thick sweater just to feel comfortable.
The nature section was the most crowded area of the whole fair. A large poster on the wall showed a tiger and a monkey living together in a deep jungle. Below it, a beautiful painting featured a butterfly resting gently on a bunch of grape leaves, while a fox peeked out from behind a tree in the corner. Lin used a tablet to visit the school's website and learn more about these animals and where they lived in the wild.
In another part of the hall, a student sat at a small table with a recorder and collected the sounds of different environments. Next to this was a farming display showing a goat standing near a banana tree, with a field of golden wheat stretching out in the background. A small sign explained that farmers often use rubber bands and thin thread to support young plants as they grow taller. Lin found these details very interesting.
The world culture booth attracted many curious students. A teacher held up a collection of old British coins, including some pence that had not been used for over a hundred years. She explained that many great inventions were created by pioneers who were brave enough to try something completely new. One glass case nearby showed an early recorder, a device once used to save people's voices before modern technology came along. The students listened carefully and took notes in their books.
At the end of the day, Lin felt truly proud and full of new ideas. Helping Grandpa show his robot invention to so many visitors had been an unforgettable experience. Lin wrote down all the new things learned at the fair and looked forward to visiting the school's website later to read more about each topic. It had been a long day, but also one of the best Saturdays of the year.
