The Most Predictable English You Will Ever Need

Airports feel intimidating because everything happens under time pressure. Announcements echo, staff speak quickly, and the line behind you never stops growing. Yet an airport is also the most predictable English environment in the world. The same four checkpoints appear in almost every country, and each one uses a small set of questions that barely changes.

At the check-in counter, expect two questions. The first is about luggage: "Are you checking any bags today?" You can answer with "Just this one, please" or "No, only carry-on." The second is about seating: "Would you prefer a window or an aisle?" Nobody expects a long explanation here, and a three-word answer is completely normal.

Security is different, because it is mostly about listening rather than speaking. Officers give instructions, not questions: "Remove your laptop," "Take off your belt," "Step forward, please." If you miss a word, the safest response is not silence but a simple "Sorry, could you repeat that?" Staff repeat instructions all day long, and asking is far faster than guessing wrong.

Immigration officers ask about your purpose and your plans. "What is the purpose of your visit?" is answered with a short phrase such as "Tourism" or "A business conference." "How long will you be staying?" needs only "Ten days." Long, nervous explanations do not help; officers are trained to notice hesitation, and short honest answers sound more confident than rehearsed speeches.

Problems are the one place where you must speak first. If your flight is delayed or your connection is at risk, go to the counter and describe your situation plainly: "My connecting flight leaves in forty minutes. Can you help me?" Staff cannot solve a problem they have not heard about, and a clear sentence from you is worth more than a perfect accent.

第一個關於行李:「Are you checking any bags today?」你可以回答「Just this one, please」或「No, only carry-on」。第二個關於座位:「Would you prefer a window or an aisle?」

安檢人員給的是指令,不是問題:「Remove your laptop」、「Take off your belt」、「Step forward, please」。

「What is the purpose of your visit?」用一個短語回答就好,例如「Tourism」或「A business conference」;「How long will you be staying?」

Can you help me?」
