Jay thought joining the school swim team would be a fun and easy way to stay fit after school. He had swum at the beach a few times before, so he felt sure the training would not be too hard. However, on the very first day, he realized that he was much more wrong than he had expected.

The coach asked everyone to swim ten laps without stopping. Jay could only finish four before his arms and legs gave up completely. He felt a lot more tired than he ever did after gym class. His heart was beating much faster than usual, and he could barely catch his breath at the edge of the pool.

Looking at his teammates made the situation even harder to accept. They moved through the water a lot more smoothly than he did. Some of them were even twice as fast as Jay. The pool suddenly seemed much longer than it had looked from the side.

After practice, the coach walked over and said with a smile, "The first week is always the hardest. Don't give up." She explained that the other students had practiced much longer than Jay had. A few of them even trained on weekends. She told him that he needed to work even harder and arrive an hour earlier every day if he wanted to improve.

Jay nodded and made up his mind to keep going. He knew the training was much tougher than he had imagined, but he believed the gap between him and his teammates would get smaller day by day. That evening, he set his alarm for an hour earlier than usual. He had learned one important lesson: real improvement is always a lot harder than it looks.
