Every year, students from our school visit the community centre. This visit is available to all kids in the third grade. This year, twenty students from Class B go together. Among them, some students are excited and some feel a little nervous. They want to learn about political leaders and how they work for the general public.
The president of the town council offers a warm welcome to the group. He is an important public figure in the community. In his view, young people should consider how the government helps society. He continues to explain that a minister helps to produce new laws. These laws help to control how people live and work together. At least one important law is passed every year.
Next, the students meet some police officers at the centre. The police have the authority to keep the law and protect the public. The general crime rate in the town is very low. This is probably because the police and the public work well together. The police are also able to offer help to people who are in trouble.
The students also learn about the war against poverty. Local leaders view this as one of the biggest problems in society. They offer programmes that are available for families who need help. One student figures out that even a small act of kindness can make a difference. At least one person in the group says she wants to help others when she grows up.
Before they leave, the teacher asks the students to consider what they can do for their community. Many kids say they want to continue learning about how society works. They are probably going to be the next generation of leaders. This special day at the community centre is one they will never forget.
