Tom is a student at a junior high school in Taiwan. Last month, his school held a huge conference where students from every division of the school could join. The teacher explained the procedure step by step: each group would choose a topic, do research, and then present their findings to the class. Tom was excited to take part.

Tom's group chose to reflect on the story of Germany after World War II. At first, Tom assumed that the country had become successful very quickly. However, an expert speaker at the conference told them otherwise. Germany had to admit its mistakes and work through many difficult circumstances before true peace could begin. Both religious and traditional differences among its people had to be respected along the way.

Tom listened to a radio program that his teacher shared with the class. Through it, he became aware of how hard it was to replace hatred with understanding. Germany refused to let division prevent its citizens from building a new future. The government intended to follow a fair procedure so that every person had a seat in the decision-making process. Under these circumstances, the country slowly began to heal.

During the trial run of his group's presentation, Tom found it hard to respond to some of the questions. Unless he studied harder, he would not be ready in time. He had to admit that his attitude toward history had not always been serious. He often assumed that old events had nothing to do with his life today. But now he realized that was not true.

His teacher told the class that the goal of learning history was not just for profit or to pass a test. It was to help students become more aware citizens of the world. She said that people who refuse to learn from the past often repeat the same mistakes. A successful society requires everyone to respond with kindness and work together to prevent conflict from happening again.

After the conference, Tom reflected on everything he had heard. He intended to read more books about world history and share what he learned with his family. He also wanted to respond to the ideas of others with a more open attitude. The experience had taught him that peace is not easy, but it is possible — especially when people are willing to listen, admit their mistakes, and refuse to give up, no matter the circumstances.
