Wei is an ordinary junior high school student who loves to write. One morning, he had a cup of coffee with his mother while they read the news together. The article was about a new construction project near their home. It said the project would help the youth of their town. Wei thought this was an excellent topic for the school paper, so he decided to write a story about it.
Wei went to see the editor of the school paper, Ms. Chen. She gave him a broad introduction to the work of a reporter. "Anybody can write a few sentences," she said, "but a good reporter must commit to finding the real story." She also told Wei that he had a gift for asking good questions. Wei felt happy and ready to start.
The next day, Wei visited the construction site near his home. A female worker there was extremely friendly and agreed to talk to him. She told Wei that new regulations had changed the design of the building. This was a blow to many people because the old plan had suited the community better. However, she said the new center would still be great for everyone in the neighborhood.
Wei also talked to some native residents who lived near the site. One man was fairly excited about the project. A teacher told Wei that the center would help young people acquire useful skills. She said there would be technical classes for computers and cooking. Wei decided to repeat his visit the next week to learn even more.
Inside the new center, there would be a room for religion and culture events. There would also be a coffee corner where people could relax, and a kitchen where members could learn to cook simple foods like eggs. There was even a small reading area with books of all kinds, including mystery stories about murder. Anybody in the community could join a club there for free.
A government officer also talked to Wei. He said that the wage for many workers in the area was not very high. The free technical classes at the center could help ordinary people acquire better jobs. Wei understood that this project was not just about construction. It was about helping the whole community live a better life.
After two weeks, Wei finished his article. The editor, Ms. Chen, read it and said it was excellent work. Wei felt a great sense of relief. The whole experience had been a wonderful introduction to real reporting. He was extremely proud to have told such an important story. He hoped that anybody who read it would understand how much the new center could help the community.
