Last spring, our class of adolescents went on a field trip to Harbour Bay, a coastal city known for its science museum and beautiful seaside avenue. We were all excited to step away from our usual classroom web of homework and tests. Before we left, our teacher reminded us not to fool around and to work in a group so that no one would get lost.

At the museum, we met Dr. Chen, a local astronomer who had won a gold medal for his research on distant stars. He gave us an oral presentation about how light from stars can travel across an entire continent before reaching Earth. When he pressed a button with a quick click, a flash of light appeared on the ceiling, showing the positions of major stars. I could feel the excitement in my belly as I imagined exploring the universe.

After lunch, things turned into mild chaos. Two of my classmates wandered off and got lost near the harbour area. The rest of us had to nail down a plan quickly. Our teacher called the museum's front desk, but the receiver was busy for several minutes, which made everyone even more nervous. We felt like a flood of worry was washing over us.

One of the lost students, Mark, had forgotten to take his daily pill for his allergy. He touched his forehead and said it felt warm. Luckily, a museum staff member found both students and brought them back safely. It felt like a huge weight had been lifted from our shoulders.

After all, the trip turned out to be a great learning experience. We had to compromise on our afternoon plans and skip the gift shop, but we still gained so much. Being on one's own for even a short time taught us lessons no textbook could. In the long run, experiences like these help adolescents grow more confident and independent. We would gladly suck it up and do it all over again next year.
